WomenTechIceland Honored with UTmessan Diversity Award Nomination

We are incredibly honored and excited to share that WomenTechIceland was nominated for the 2025 UT Fjölbreytileikafyrirmynd award at UTmessan. This prestigious award recognizes organizations, individuals, and initiatives that actively promote and support diversity and inclusion in the tech industry in Iceland.

While the award this year went to Bara Tala, we extend our congratulations to them and to our fellow nominee, Safa Jamai, for their work in fostering a more diverse and inclusive tech landscape.

A Recognition of Our Mission and Community

At WomenTechIceland, we have been working since 2017 to increase and promote the participation of women in technology in Iceland. Our community has grown to over 1,000 members, and we have organized numerous events both locally and internationally to share knowledge, advocate for equality, and highlight the challenges and opportunities for women in the tech sector.

Our mission has always been clear: to create a supportive community where women in tech, or those aspiring to enter the field, can find encouragement, education, and opportunities. Through our events, discussions, and research, we have provided insights into the experiences of women in tech in Iceland, highlighting barriers to participation such as skill development gaps and workplace culture.

Our Commitment to Change

In 2024, WomenTechIceland:

  • Partnered with RIKK, the Research Center for Gender Equality at the University of Iceland, to host a lecture series on increasing women's participation in tech.

  • Organized a hackathon on artificial intelligence at the University of Iceland.

  • Conducted surveys on women's experiences in the tech sector, shedding light on the need for more opportunities and better work environments.

  • Participated in international panels, discussions, and collaborations to promote gender equality in tech globally.

Additionally, our organization has played a significant role in international events like the Nordic Women in Tech Awards and continues to support women in the innovation sector through accelerator programs and partnerships.

Looking Forward

This nomination is not just an acknowledgment of our past efforts, but a reminder of how much work still needs to be done. WomenTechIceland remains committed to creating real change in the Icelandic tech sector by educating, advocating, and building a strong community that empowers women in technology.

A huge thank you to our incredible community, partners, and the UTmessan judging panel for recognizing our work. This nomination belongs to every single person who has contributed to our mission. Together, we will continue to push for a more inclusive and diverse tech industry in Iceland.
